Rip-off Britain: Shocking truth revealed in Vouchercloud’s ‘Freddo Index’.
The Freddo Index
I get lots of emails dropping into my inbox every day but when Vouchercloud emailed me about ‘The Freddo Index’, the companies tongue in cheek look into how old favourites like Freddos, Mars bars, Cinema tickets and comics have risen excessively since 2000, I thought it was worth investigating.
I was right! The ‘Freddo Index’ is an interesting read and the results are shocking. Not only are we paying inflation-busting prices for some of our favourite products, they’re shrinking too!
Take the humble Freddo. It was my ‘go to’ chockie treat for the girls when they wanted something from the sweet shop. It only cost 10p and at 20g it wasn’t going to ruin their appetite: win, win! However, since 2000, the Cadbury’s Freddo has increased in price from 10p to 25p, whilst at the same time it has decreased in weight from 20g to 18g! It’s a double whammy! The nerve!
There are loads more surprising facts in this interesting and informative article from Vouchercloud, so I highly recommend checking it out: HERE

Over to you.
If you’ve read the Vouchercloud article on the Freddo Index or watched my vlog on the subject, what did you think? Have you noticed other products that have increased dramatically in price in recent years? Have you noticed products shrinking? As always, I’d love to know what you think.

This is definitely something I have noticed with chocolate bars inparticular! So cheeky! #PoCoLo
I have just been here in the UK for 6 years and yet I notice this! Products are getting smaller! Once I bought this flatbread in a supermarket & I always buy the said flatbread from them because its cheaper and looking at the packet they have 7 pieces of it while the others have 8! And here I thought I am saving by buying from them!
That’s really sneaky! The nerve! Thanks for stopping by Merlinda!
Absolutely disgraceful, my daily allowance cannot handle this price raise,Harambe did not die for this.
So cheeky. Gone be the days you could get anything for 10p though ! #fortheloveofblog
I’ve definitely noticed this with chocolate bars! The price goes up but the size gets smaller! x #fortheloveofBLOG
I too have noticed the price increase and size decrease with chocolate bars. Most of the nice ones are nearly a pound now. Gone are the days of a cheeky Galaxy on the way home.
That’s amazing, we all just accept it as part of inflation but I didn’t realise how much these company’s were getting away with. We should boycott certain products and they would soon have to re think.
I have so noticed this. Price of chocolate and sweets is soaring. Stinger bars were the ones I remember being 10 p and now they are way more and half size!
Stinger bars! Eeeeeeh, That takes me back. I’m old enough to remember Texan bars (chocolate coated Nougat…Chewy in the summer but break your teeth rock-hard in the winter).
Every year creme eggs get a bit smaller! Which is incidentally fine by me as this is the ONLY chocolate pretty much that I don’t like. But I think it’s a shameful marketing strategy from Cadbury, and if they make Crunchies smaller then I might just boycott. Maybe. Probably not. I’ll just buy two. #KCACOLS
Lol! I will keep an eye on your blog to see if ‘Crunchy Gate’ ever materialises…See, I can remember when you could get a Big Feast lolly for 10p!!! 10p!!! They call them Feasts now…At least that’s a bit of an admission to the fact they are WAYYYYYYY smaller than they used to be…
Plus, with lollies, they aren’t just getting smaller, they can’t even be bothered to put the jokes and riddles on the stick anymore! What is the world coming to….Eeeeeeee!
Don’t get me started on Creme Eggs either! 70p and you can’t even fit a teaspoon in them now to fish out the fondant!! #KCACOLS
James! Yes! Creme Eggs…I would be even more outraged if I liked them..But I am ‘put out’ that we are being conned! I prefer the Truffle Eggs myself. I wouldn’t care but I’m more of a Galaxy fan now Cadburys have changed their chocolate formula. Thanks for your comment. It did make me chuckle…You have outed yourself as someone who eats his chocolate with a teaspoon…Or at least DID 😉
The nerve! The nerve! I am outraged. I used to love those Freddo chocolates and only the other day I said to Mr C that I was sure that they used to be 10p at one time and he scoffed. A-ha I was right. However saying this I can’t believe how much chocolate bars are in general now. In Jersey we are talking 70p (I think) in Jersey. Outrageous! On that note I am going to go and eat a family sized bar of choclate, whilst telling myself that it’s not really family-sized as I am sure that they have decreased it in size to a one-person bar *cough* #KCACOLS
He He! GO for it…I have a feeling you know EXACTLY how much a chocolate bar costs on the fair island of Jersey, Emma 😉
I noticed them shrinking too! When we were kids, back when they were actually 10p they were way bigger! Everything is smaller now though, crème eggs is my bug bear! #KCACOLS
Yes, to the creme eggs! I thought I was going mad but apparently you did used to be able to get a teaspoon in them to get the fondant out!
I have definitely noticed this! Mars bars are so much smaller and I always feel like there are less crisps in a packet too. a bit sneaky really! – Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday
Don’t get me started on crisps! It’s mostly air in the packets these days. I get the big bags of Morrisons Value Tortilla chips. They are only about 50p! Mind you, Beth’s just given me some of her Value milk chocolate bar (family sized)…Tastes like it cost 30p…Yak! Will hopefully be back at KCACOLs next week.
I remember when the price of Freddo went up!! Couldn’t believe it haha.
I noticed that about Freddo bats too. I refuse to buy them now as I think at 25p for that little bar it’s a total rip-off. Interesting read! #kcacols
This is really interesting, I’m going to show my husband, he loves stuff like this! Christmas chocolates like Quality Street and Roses seem to shrink every year! X #KCACOLS
I found it fascinating as well, CLaire. I would have liked them to expand their study to look at crisps etc too.
This is something me and my other half often talk about as chocolate bar fiends…Freddo bars are something from my childhood and I remember them as only 10p, now they are 25p and definitely smaller! I also noticed the same with Mars bars too…it is a scandal that they get away with increasing the price and label it as inflation but at the same time reduce the size of the bars. Such a fab vlog! #pocolo
Yorkies have shrunk in the last 6 months or so too. To be honest, a lot of chocolate bars have though Galaxy bars seem to have retained their size #PoCoLo
I think you are right, Kay. And with Cadburys changing their recipe and sizes and Galaxy retaining theirs, I think I may be stepping away from Cadburys.
I knew it!! There are loads of treats I remember being bigger when I was younger but you just think that you were smaller so they seemed bigger! I’ll be having a look at that- thanks for sharing xx #KCACOLS
Ha! I know what you mean…It’s a bit of both but they ARE smaller! The nerve! Thanks for popping across Sonia!
It is a pet peeve of mine. I don’t mind prices increasing due to inflation – but don’t make the products smaller too!! #kcacols
Yep, complete double whammy of the rip-off kind!
Wow I was only thinking of this a couple of weeks ago. They are 30c here in Ireland and I bought two fudge bars which were my go to years ago and they were 65c each what the hell! #KCACOLS
This is shocking when companies do this. I can’t believe that they now cost 25p when did that happen? There are so many other products that have followed the same suit…..crisps and sweets. I used to remember when crisps were about 4op a bag, now they are about 70p. These companies think they can pull the wool over our eyes, but we still buy them. Thanks so much for linking up at #fortheloveofBLOG. Claire x
THanks for hosting #Fortheloveofblog, Claire. I think so often we don’t even look at the price anymore…Especially when we buy our individual crisps and sweets in the supermarket and put them in the basket. If we thought about it we’d think again!
Oh there are so many things that have shrank and decreased in price – my husband and I had a conversation about this no long ago. Monster Munch, Cadburys Chocolate bar, Creme eggs – all are so much smaller than they used to be! #KCACOLS
I feel like this issue needs further investigation and a Panorama programme dedicated to it, Maria!!!
It makes me feel so old, but I do find myself saying things like “I remember when you could get a Mars bar for 25p, and when cans of coke were about 35p from the vending machine at school”! It’s shocking! The obsession with the price of Freddos really does make me laugh though. x #KCACOLS
Yes, Madeline! Vending machines are another benchmark! I remember how cheap cans were. Shieshk! Thanks for your comment.
I definitely remember when Freddos used to be 10p I wonder what their justification would be for the rises so far above inflation and shriking in size? Would be interesting to see what their actual cost to make is and their profit margins over that space of time! #KCACOLS
in return to Janet’s comment i feel like crying, only today i realised Harambe died and Freddos are overpriced.
