Children’s ‘Ikea Hack’ bedroom makeover finishing touches: Cube shelves.
Finishing touches to Emily’s bedroom.
Earlier this year I showed you our daughter Emily’s ‘Ikea hack’ bedroom makeover (here). Months later and I’ve finally removed the cellophane wrapping on the Pack of 3 White Cube Shelves we bought from B&Q, (link here).
Cubes rule!
When I started planning Emily’ bedroom makeover, I wanted to include some fun, funky shelving units. I’d already chosen a tall Ikea Billy Bookcase for her books but I liked the idea of having shelves above her DIY desk for her pencil pots and ornaments.
I didn’t want open ended shelves and preferred the idea of shelf cubes similar to the oak ones we had in our bedroom. I scoured the internet for ideas and then spotted a set of 3 White Cube Shelves on the B&Q website (here), great value at only £27. What’s more, I could configure them so they were in line with Emily’s DIY MDF desk, (not that I’m OCD or anything…)
Fitting the shelves.
I fitted the shelves all by myself! This is quite an achievement as I had to use hollow wall fixings, a spirit level, a tape measure and plan exactly where to put the shelves and the screws. Usually, when I try to fix something to our (dot and dab) hollow walls, I hit a bit of mortar or one of the hollow wall fixings fails. Amazingly, none of these things happened and I successfully fixed the shelves to the wall. They aren’t wonky either! Result!
Cube shelf heaven.
Emily loves her new shelves and we’ve already filled them with her pens, pencils and some of her favourite things. I’m delighted with the finished shelves and I think they compliment the rest of the room with their white finish and clean lines.
The shelves fit perfectly above Emily’s DIY MDF Desk. She has easy access to all of her pen and pencil pots without them taking up space on her small work space.
The large rectangular cube is perfect for displaying her colourful toys (I wish I could say what on earth they are, but I haven’t got a clue!).
See, this snazzy new cube shelf has put a smile on the face of weird orange toy number 1.
