Bargain Fabrics, Castle Donington: fantastic fabric, low prices.
This isn’t a sponsored post. I just wanted to tell you about one of my favourite places to buy fabric.
Pssst! Want to know a secret?
I’ve been saving loads of money on fabric for my craft and sewing projects for years since discovering Bargain Fabrics, an amazing cut-price fabric shop in Castle Donington, Leicestershire.
I’m a Craftaholic!
You’ll know by now I love making things and I love sewing too. I get my love of crafts and creative things from my mum. She taught me how to knit, sew and make all kinds of things growing up. When I wasn’t spending hours drawing pictures of muscle men and superheroes on sheets of old dot matrix printer paper (whilst my sister drew princesses and fairies), I’d be doing a cross stitch or knitting leg warmers!
One of my favourite creative hobbies nowadays (apart from DIY) is sewing, particularly small projects like making purses, bags and cushions. I find it such a therapeutic hobby, so relaxing. I love working with all of the beautiful fabrics too, there are so many gorgeous textures, colours, materials and patterns.
Sewing for your supper.
In recent years there’s been an explosion of interest in crafts and sewing. People aren’t just making things for pleasure either, they’re selling their handmade creations on websites such as Etsy, eBay and Not on the Highstreet.
Unfortunately, it isn’t easy to make a living this way once you’ve factored in the time to make your item and the cost of materials. Unless you can source cheap materials, that is. I spent quite a while searching online and locally for places where I could buy low-cost but good quality fabric. I was ready to give up until a friend told me about Bargain Fabrics in Castle Donington.
When I visited Bargain Fabrics for the first time, I couldn’t believe my luck. This wonderful shop in Castle Donington is an Aladdin’s cave, crammed full of wonderful fabrics, leather and haberdashery supplies. I’ve been buying beautiful fabric for pennies rather than pounds from Bargain Fabrics ever since.
Bargain Fabrics.

Upstairs in Bargain Fabrics you can buy bargain fabric by the roll and 6 large pieces of fabric for £4.
Bargain Fabrics, is a specialist in remnant and clearance fabrics. Located in Castle Donington, this family run business has been trading since 1995. They stock a huge selection of quality upholstery, curtain and designer fabrics at great bargain prices. There are two floors of fabrics, with some of the best bargains upstairs where you can buy fabrics by the roll and large pieces of fabric remnants for 75p, (or 6 pieces for £4). Although the remnants vary in size, one 75p piece is usually enough for a large 18-20 inch cushion.
Downstairs you can find haberdashery, lining materials and rolls of fabric which you can buy from as little as £4.50 per metre. There are also unbeatable deals on rollends of fabric and leather.

You can pick up leather at a bargain price too: Whole hides, large pieces and smaller offcuts in different colours.

Service with a smile.

You’ll receive a warm welcome from the Bargain Fabric staff: Sue, Caroline and Steph. (Linda wasn’t in on the day I visited).
Bargain Fabrics is my ‘Happy Place’, not just because it’s filled with sumptuous fabrics, but because of the lovely atmosphere the staff create. The door to the shop is always open and as I walk up the hill from my car I can usually hear the sound of laughter and banter from within. Then, as I enter, Sue, Caroline, Steph (and Linda when she’s in) give me such a warm welcome, I feel as if they are welcoming a friend into their home, rather than a customer into a shop.
After replenishing my stock of fabric (without denting my budget) I find it hard to tear myself away, part of me wishing I worked there too. The staff always seem to be having such a wonderful time, as if they are friends first, colleagues second. Their enthusiasm is infectious and they are always so eager to help customers with their wealth of knowledge and expertise.
So, after hanging out with the staff and feasting my eyes on all the lovely fabrics, I often find myself wandering back to my car feeling like I’m missing out on something, keen to return to my little fabric haven where I am always assured of a warm and friendly welcome.
